Daesoonjinrihoe's Ox Seeking Pictures
Ox Seeking Pictures
A metaphoric visual representation of cultivation in Daesoon Jinrihoe
This is a series of pictures (Simudo) that depicts one's journey toward spiritual enlightment using the metaphor of a boy finding an ox. The boy is a disciple and the ox symbolizes Daesoon Truth which Sangje unfolded into this world. In short, these paintings symbolize the whole process of cultivation undertaken to realize Daesoon Truth.
The boy is in a deep contemplation under a pine tree where he asks questions such as "What is life?", "Where did I come from?", and "Where am I heading to?" The boy who is accustomed to living a daily routine life has come to the point of seeking the reason for human existence.
Devotedly Honoring the Teachings of Sangje
The boy points to hoof prints left by an ox which he has found on the mountain trail ahead of him. The ox's hoof prints symbolize the guidance of divine beings. During the process of resolving his questions, the boy does in fact meet with Sangje's Daesoon Truth through the diverse forms of guidance offered by divine beings. However, having not yet seen the ox, the boy has yet to truly grasp Daesoon Truth, and hence he just follows the vague traces of it which are apparent to him. This is the state where a person is introduced to Daesoon Truth.
Striving Diligently onward for One's Cultivation
After following the ox's hoof prints, the boy finally sees the hindqurters of ox. Suddenly, a bolt of lightning and thunder fills the sky as a howling storm arrives. Still, the boy should push himself forward through the rough and narrow mountain trail in search of the ox. Having found the ox's hindquarters, he feels encouraged and will not give up despite the roughness and bumpiness of the path before him. This is the stage where desciples push themselves forward diligently towards spiritual enlightenment and overcome many of the diffficulties encountered during their cultivation.
Maintaing Your Exertion with Utmost Sincerity
The boy finally encounters the white ox. The weather has cleared up and the boy has safely crossed over the steep valley. This is the time to build a friendship with the ox, an act which signifies the stage where the disciples discard the thoughts and behaviors acquired from the Former World where mutual conflict prevailed. At this stage, the boy exerts himself in inspired efforts to fully internalize Daesoon Truth in order to advance to the stage of complete unification and identification with Dao.
*white ox: this is an analogy for the realization of Sangje's Daesoon Truth
Reaching the Stage of Truth by Perfectly Aligning Oneself with Daesoon Truth
The boy is now playing a flute while riding on the white ox. He looks fully calm and peaceful. This is the stage where the boy is completely united with Daesoon Truth. Here, the boy represents a disciple who has reached the state of being in full accordance with Daesoon Truth of Sangje. This is the stage of complete unification and identification with Dao.
The Later World of Earthly Paradise
At this stage, the boy has united with the white ox and transformed into an Earthly-Immortal. The world has changed into a beautiful and peaceful place where female celestial musicians perform their melodies, the herbs of eternal youth bloom, and cranes stroll around the meadow. This symbolizes the stage where human beings are transformed into Earthly Immortals while the world has become an Earthly Paradise. This is the glorious Later World where the Daesoon Truth of Sangje has been spread throughout the shole world.
*Earthly-Immortal : a perfected human being who has attained divinity and immortality through cultivation.

Precepts of Daesoonjinrihoe
Precepts
1. Do not deceive yourself
Since human beings are governed and controlled by their minds, and all the words spoken and all actions taken are expressions of one's mind. There are two dispositions of mind: conscience and selfishness. Conscience is the innate mind originally bestowed upon humankind by Heaven, whereas selfishness is the product of greed arising from one's pursuit of wealth. There is a strong and inappropriate tendency to have one's conduct blindned by greed.
One must therefore make a constant effort to recover one's own innate conscience by discarding selfishness. As all human evils stem from poor conscience, one must maintain one's conscience by acting in accordance with it. In this way, one will become honest and true to oneself.
2. Practice virtuous speech
Words are the sound of the mind, while acitons are traces derived from it. Your way of speaking tends to reveal your affinity for either good or evil. If you speak well of others, the traces of this goodness will keep growing and bring you greater fortune. If you speak ill of others, the traces of this evil will keep growing and bring you greater misfortune. Thus happiness and misery in your life inevitably depend on you way of speaking; therefore, always be mindful when speaking to others.
3. Do not cause grievance in others
Hating others or betraying their goodwill incites grievance. Therefore, grievance can be pevented by loving others and being gracious towards them while demonstrating the virtues of politeness, gentleness, humility, and modesty.
4. Do not disregard the beneficence bestowed upon you
Favors are the benefit that others offer to you. To disregard their favors is to forget and betray their beneficence. Thus, once you receive benefit, you must reciprocate it at some later point.
*You are indebted to the great divinities in Heaven and Earth for your life, lifespan, happiness and wealth. Thus you should acknowledge the grace you received from them by fulfilling your duty as a human being with sincerity, repectfulness and faithfulness.
*You are indebted to your parents for your life and upbringing. Thus you should practice filial piety with the ethical goal of repecting elders and returning beneficnece back to the root.
*You are indebted to your teachers for their guidance and upbringing. For this, you should reciprocate by practicing their teachings as a disciple.
*You are indebted to your employers for your livelihood, wages and job title. For this, you should reciprocate by working faithfully and diligently as an employee.
5. Promote the betterment of others
Promote the betterment of others is the basic principle of mutual beneficence and the fundamental concept through which the salvation of humanity will be achieved. Do not spare any effort while promoting the betterment of others.
Combine your efforts with others and cooperate to accomplish your aims.

By doing so, an everlasting paradise eventually arises in this world.

As to Resolution of grievances for mutual benficence
Jeju Island
Resolution of Grievances for Mutual Beneficence
This tenet details the whole process of preventing Cheok from arising and resolving forms of Cheok which are otherwise known as negative Karma as well as promoting the betterment of others.Cheok is a grudge that another person harbors against you.
Generally, people provoke Cheok through their vanity and greed.
This Cheok or negative Karma, created either in your present or past life, brings misfortune and blocks your way to success.
Our cultivation is carried out to resolve all such Cheok or Karma by living within our means an promoting the betterment of others while praticing specific forms of spiritual cultivation created by Doju Jo Jeongsan.
Then, all grudges and grievances piled up among human beings as well as between human beings and divine beings will be resolved and this will lead to the realization of ultimate peace and harmony for humankind.
What is the meaning of Harmonious union between Divines Beings and Human Beings?
This tenet means that divine beings and human beings can come to depend on each other in a harmonious and complementary way that transforms both into ideal beings. The human mind is an invisible gate through which devine beings come in and out. In this way, divine beings can harmonize with human beings to bring about various occurrences. Human beings come to achieve harmony with divine beings through their pure minds. If humans cultivate deeply enough, they achieve purity, eliminate selfishness, and live in harmony with others by resolving all kinds of grievances and grudges. Only at this advanced stage, are they then able to interact with holy divine beings and even Sangje Himself. Eventually, they become enlightened to understand all matters in the universe and are empowered to achieve all their aims at will.

What does Eumyang-hapdeok refer to?
Geumgangsan Toseong Training Temple Complex of Daesoonjinrihoe located in
Gangwon Province, Korea
Virtuous Concordance of Yin and Yang
This refers to the harmonious intergration of the virtues of yin and yang in order to bring about the ideal relations among all beings. All beings exist in relationship of relativity with each other such as light and darkness, heaven and earth, and divine beings and human beings. Likewise, all social or human relations such as those between nation and individual, parent and child, and husband and wife are necessarily relationships characterized by mutual dependence. Yet, these relationships are often subject to conflict and disharmony. Therefore, the 'Virtuous Concordance of Yin and Yang', in terms of social or human relations, refers the resolution of these conflicts and the creation of a harmonious state wherin human beings collaborate and help one another.

The Holy Symbol of Daesoonjinrihoe
Daesoon means 'circle', and is related to the philosophical concept of Mugeuk and Taegeuk.
It symbolizes the law of universal ciculation and the principles of nature itself.
The three circles in the above symbol signify that the whole universe consists of the Three Realms:Heaven, Earth, and Humanity.
The Chinese character '大(Great)'appears four times within the circle.
This implies the four basic principles of change in nature:
Birth, Growth, Harvest, and Storage, which develop into the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter and four directions of north, south, east and west.
Furthermore, it also implies benevolence, propriety, righteousness, and wisdom as found in the way of humanity.
Mugeuk: the endlessness or boundlessness from which all phenomena can be derived.
Taegeuk: the Absolute from which all myriad beings and events are developed through the forms of yin and yang.

Daesoonjinrihoe, Sangsaeng Ethics for Global Peace
Sangsaeng Ethics for Global Peace
(Presentation Statement for World Council of Religions for Peace, Torino, Italy)
(Presentation Statement for World Council of Religions for Peace, Torino, Italy)
Kim Wook
Head of Religious Research & Edification Dept, Daesoon Jinrihoe, Korea
Head of Religious Research & Edification Dept, Daesoon Jinrihoe, Korea
Daesoon Jinrihoe is a Korean national religion that has 147 years of history. The holy master Kang Jeungsan, the One we worship, unfolded His Dao during the late 19th to early 20th century. At that time, human life was extremely devastated by continuous wars between the East and the West. It was then the holy master tried to change the world of mutual conflict into a peaceful world under the principle of Sang-saeng, or mutual beneficence. Thus, global peace is the goal for Daesoon Jinrihoe.
It is so obvious that we all are the children of God and we should respect and love each other as brothers and sisters. But current circumstances remain far from this ideal. We see endless conflicts among nations for military and financial reasons. Religious conflicts are getting more violent and the threat of terrorism are prevalent everywhere.
We can say global peace is what is most important for humanity. Then, why do these things keep happening? It is because nations put their own interests before others, businesses or people only care about their own private benefits, and religions exclude others who don’t share their same beliefs.
It is because everyone is only caring about his or her own interest disregarding the universal values of peace, human rights, and ecology. Humans have pure conscience as their essential nature. Humans have the ability to accept everyone without prejudice and to act for fairness and justice in all matters.
But when we try to fulfill desires that go beyond our means, we lose our innate heart-mind. This is why it’s difficult to communicate and feel empathy for others. Therefore, pursuing global peace without working ourselves to restore our innate nature is as insecure as building a castle on sand.
Then, what should we do to restore our human nature and realize global peace? The realization of true peace may not just be about getting rid of wars or violence. But we in Daesoon Jinrihoe believe that humanity can live as a family by practicing the ethics of Haewon-sangsaeng and Boen-sangsaeng.
First, Haewon-sangsaeng is to resolve all grievances for mutual beneficence. Human history is full of mutual conflicts which have piled up for hundreds and thousands of years. In all human affairs, people thereby lost morality and incurred grudges of others, and these grudges eventually filled up all three realms of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity. Accordingly, these formed the cause of the disastrous calamities which have occurred around the world.
Therefore, we should avoid provoking the wrath of others, and resolve all hatred and grievances. There is a sort of dignity or honor which is innate in all humans. We should respect and love each other so that we can end our resentments. Kang Jeungsan said “Resolve the grievances of your enemy and love him as your benefactor.” His words show the deep meanings contained in these Haewon ethics.
Next, Boeun-sangsaeng is to reciprocate favors for mutual beneficence. We are born into a state of grace wherein we live our lives and enjoy happiness throughout infinite time and space. We owe our lives to our parents, siblings, relatives, neighbors, society, and nation. We can thrive upon the foundation of moral ethics and the cultures built by our ancestors.
First, we must see that the world is full of love and gratitude, and come to know that we cannot exist without others. The truth is that we can live well only after we enable others to live well.
Disciples of Daesoon Jinrihoe practice the truth of Haewon and Boeun Sangsaeng by following the five precepts.
The first one is “Do not deceive yourself.” Second, “Practice virtuous speech.” Third, “Do not provoke Cheok in others.” Fourth, “Do not disregard the beneficence others bestow upon you.” And fifth, “Promote the betterment of others.”
Dojeon Park Woodang, who established Daesoon Jinrihoe, said that a peaceful world where all humanity is guided by the truth of loving one another can be realized when we lead by example. We do this by making harmonious families, uniting with our neighbors, and by respecting and embracing many different values held by both religious and non-religious people. Going from the perspective of ‘you and I’ to that of a collective ‘us’ creates a world where all beings can live in harmony. And this is the peace-centered thought pursued by Daesoon Jinrihoe.

The Reordering Works of Heaven and Earth
In the middle of May 1901, Sangje opened the Great Daesoon Truth with His judgment on existing deities and a corresponding 49 day fast in Daewon Temple in Moak Mountain, Jeonju. Commencing the Reordering Works of Heaven and Earth in the winter of that year, He proclaimed, "I will rebuild Heaven and Earth and allow divine beings to pass in and out of human minds so that human beings can be renewed and fulfill their Heavenly purposes." Then He added, "I will redeem humanity by exercising great authority over the Three Realms, constructing the Later World of Earthly Paradise with the way of mutual beneficence."
Resolving grievances
Sangje diagnosed that Heaven and Earth had deviated from their proper course due to the grievances that had filled up the Three Realms. These grievances were the result of the principle of mutual conflict in the Former World. He alos said, "The grievance of Dan Zhu, the son of King Yao, is the beginning of all grievances throughout history. Once this is resolved, all the knots and chains of grievances stacked up for thousands of years wil be resolved." And He carried out Reorkering Work to resolve Dan Zhu's grievance.
Also, Sangje said, "The Three Realms lost their order due to the chaos of the afterworld (nether world). Therefore, I will revise the existing Heaven-ordered Predeterminations* of mutual conflict in the afterworld in such a way that divine beings and human beings, who had been blocked for thousands of years, can cooperate with each other for mutual beneficence. Thus, the general current of Heaven and Earth will be put on the right track."
Opening up a world free from social discrimination
Sangje always used honorific languages even when speaking to men of humble birth. One of His disciples, Kim Hyeongryeol(김형렬), was embarrassed when Sangje used such honorific language when speaking to his servant. Regrarding this, Sangje said to this disciple, "That man is your servant. Not mine. Afterwards, you should respect everyone regardless of their status. In the coming days, there will be no discrimination between nobles and commoners or legitimate and illegitimate children." And He added, "You have to discard old customs of social discrimination as soon as possible and begin respecting people from lower classes. In this way, grudges can be easily resolved, and the time of peace and prosperity will be hastened."
Sangje also said, "Resolve the grudges between you and your enemy and love him as your benefactor, as doing so wil bring about good fortune. Our work is to prevent grievances and live for the betterment of others. Even if one takes only whatever good fortune remains after making others prosperous, that remaining portion will be enough.
Setting a Foundation for the Later world
One day, Sangje asked the following question to one of His disciples, "Do you think it is better to leave modern conveniences invented by westerners as they are or take them back?" And the disciple answered, "It seems better to preserve them for the convenience of humanity." And He answered, " You are right, their devices have been modeled after those in Heaven." Sangje said, "Daoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Christianity have become foundations within their ethnic cultures. Humanity has been fighting each other, claiming their own thoughts as the truth despite the fact that these systems of thought have been formed respectively through their diffferent life experiences as passed down to them by their ancestors." To solve this problem, He summoned all the deities of enlightenment and civilization to set a foundation for a future civilization by extracting the essences of each different culture and unifying them. Then, He appointed heavenly leaders for each religion:Choi Suwun as the leader of Daoism, Jinmuk as the leader of Buddhism, Zhu Xi as the leader of Confucianism, and Matteo Ricci as the leader of Christianity.
Opening a new world where men and women are equal
Sangje said, "In the Later World, women can be treated just as men according to their achievements in spiritual cultivation. Abd the old custom of male dominance over women will disappear." Further, He said the following to his disciples, "Now that this is the time of resolving grudges, I have dissolved the barrier of difference between men and women so that they have freedom to do as they wish. But later, I will re-establish the principle of propriety by balancing the positions of men and women." Sangje also said, "It is wrong to ban the remarriage of young widows and make them live in lonelilness. In the future, it will be right to allow young widows to marry young widoweres and old widows marry old widowers by holding official wedding ceremonies with their members and friends."
*Heavenly-ordered Predeterminations: cosmic plans previously made in the celestial realm, which will unfold through various events in the human world in due time.

Gucheon Sangje, Daesoon Jinrihoe
When facing despair and calamities, people naturally look to deities, buddhas, and bodhisattvas to find some sense of solace. Unbeknownst to humanity, however, deities, buddhas, and bodhisattvas have their own source of solace, and that is none other than Gucheon Sangje (the Supreme God of the Ninth Heaven). It was He whom they petitioned in humanity's darkest hour, and it was He who descended into the world to rectify disorder and reveal the path to an everlasting paradise. Brick by brick, this path is paved as we collectively resolve grudges and grievances, live in accordance with mutual beneficence, and by serve one another in gratitude.
The object of belief in Daesoon Jinrihoe is Gucheon Sangfe, the Supreme God of the Ninth Heaven who is the highest celectial deity and exercises supreme authority over the universe. He made a 'Great Itineration' around the world in response to the petition and request of all divine sages, buddhas and bodhisattvas, who have existed sinve time immemorial. Stopping on this eastern land of Korea, He spiritually entered the statue of ' golden Maitreya Buddha' in the Geumsan Temple at Moak Mountain in Jeolla Province where He stayed for thirty years. On September 19, 1871, He was born as a human being to the Kang family in Jeolla Province. His honorific name was Jeungsan.
Sangje Kang Jeungsan proclaimed the unprecedented truth to the human world throughout His 40 years of life which He committed to 'Reordering Works of Heaven and Earth'and 'Opening a New World.' Then He passed into heaven and retook His throne of ' Gucheon Eungwon Noeseong Bohwa Cheonjon Kangseong Sangje,' the Supreme God.
Gucheon (九天, the Ninth Heaven )is the highesst heaven where Sangje coordinates all the deities of Heaven and Earth.
Eungwon (應元, Response to the Supreme God) indicates that no phenomenon, including heavenly bodies, is able to come into being without a command from the Supreme God.
Noeseong (雷聲, Lightning and Thunderbolt) is a heavenly command for benevolence. It is created by the two vital forces of yin and yang. Lightning and thunderbolts help with birth, growth, nurturing, and changes on the Earth.
Bohwa (普化, Vast Becoming) signifies that every being in the world owe its existence to the benevolent activity of Supreme God.
Cheonjon (天尊, Majesty of Heaven ) indicates that Sangje is the holiest and greatest deity throughout the Three Realms of Heaven, Earth and Humanity.
Kangseong Sangje (姜聖上帝, the Supreme God Kang) is the honored name of the omiscient and omnipotent Supreme God. He exercises the Great Authority over the Three Realms and He rules, directs, and attentively watches over every being and event.

The purport of Daesoon jinrihoe
The Purport of Daesoon jinrihoe
Through His great athority over the Three Realms of Heaven, Earth and Humanity, Kang Jeungsan as Gucheon Daewon Johwa Jushin made a Great Itineration around the world. He umtimately descended into the human world.
With His 'Reordering Works of Heaven and Earth', Kang Jeungsan rectified the disorker of Heaven and Earth, and He opened a path to the everlasting Earthly Paradise as a means of saving the whole world. The universe was in such a state that the entire pantheon of divinities found themselves unable to communicate with each other, and humanity wa falling into calamities caused by the accumulation of their grievances. These great workd were mainly performed to resolve the grudges and grievances amassed throughout all incarnations, and the completion of this resolution is achieved through humanity's application of the principle of reciprocation favors out of gratitude.
Now all the grudges and bitterness stored up for millions of years are set to be resolved through the prinviples of Haewon ( the resolution of griebances) and Boeun (the reciprocation of favors). This unfolds into Daesoon Truth wherin the world is transformed through Dao, mutual conflict and hatred subside, and paradise emerges. This is what we call the Daesoon Truth of Sangje.
Kang Jeungsan proclaimed the unprecedented truth to the human world for forty years, and then returned to the throne of 'Gucheon Eungwon Noeseong Bohwa Cheonjon Kangseong Sangje' as the Supreme God.
Daesoon Jinrihoe was established in 1969 to revere and practice the teachings of Doju Jo Jeongsan, who inherited and applied Sangje's Daesoon Truth throughout his fifty years of religious activity. These teachings consist of Tenets, Creeds, and Aims.
We are now sharing this vision to encourage people who are inspired by our message or feel a Karmic affinity with us to join Daesoon Jinrihoe as we aim to create an Earthly Paradise where the truth of the 'resolution of grievances for mutual beneficence' is fully realized.
